One Room Challenge – Week 2

Written by on 4th July 2012 in Blog POSTS with 8 Comments

Thanks for coming back to the One Room Challenge! To catch up on last week’s happenings click here. There are so many cool ladies and ambitious projects in the challenge this time!!…I better keep my nose to the grindstone.  I figured I would quickly recap where I’m starting from because I did get some work done on this basement bonus room over Christmas and in January.  Over the holidays we pulled up the last bit of nasty carpet in this house, had a guy come over and knock down a wall and then my mother-in-law and the hubs and I somehow connected the flooring to the next room in 3 hours flat! Bam! I love how seamless it is…so much bigger looking too. Yay!

Next,  the “wall breaking guy” returned after Christmas to frame and install some french doors which is pictured here. Yay!

The new doors are exciting and the stage was set  for much greater things to happen to the room….and then …. nothing happened. Wwah whwaw whaw!

But hey, this is precisely what the challenge is for right !?! …To get your butt in gear and finish that project that somehow took a back seat to the Real Housewives series and experimenting with that pasta attachment for my kitchenaid mixer…anyway…I’m getting off topic.

So the plan is to get bookshelves in the back wall and make it all look fab. I have to get an electrician in to do six little pot lights in the ceiling and a “drywall guy” to fix what the “wall breaking guy” left behind. Sigh.  I have measured and priced out Ikea for the shelves and this suits me fine. Here is the plan: (Shelves are Next week)

The Table/Desk is actually the most exciting part for me and I thought it was the best thing to start know get me all revved up to finish this thing!!   So here’s Table/Desk Evolution from Craigslist “Hello Yellow” Pine with 1000 layers of shellac on it to a toned down work surface I can love!

Out with Old…sanding that sucker

Hmm… sanding evenly is harder than it looks….Jacobean Minwax Stain…oh no too dark! This was a bad day…

Sand off the Jacobean ….re-apply Early American Minwax stain…ahhh much better…

Perfect DIY Project. I made mistakes, I learned and I got to use power tools!
