Local Etsy Shopping – fave shop No. 1

Written by on 18th April 2013 in Blog POSTS with 2 Comments

Big_Etsy_LogoLately I’ve been seeing some fantastic shops on Etsy that are located right here in Victoria, BC. So, I figured I would dedicate a few posts in the next week or so to showing you some of my favourite local Etsy shops and maybe you’ll see something you like too?! My first favourite is called 1001 Treasures.

The graphic artist behind these lovely posters and cards is Sabine who is originally from Germany and now lives right here on Vancouver Island.  She has been selling on Etsy since 2008 (wow!) and her selection of antique style prints is stunning. If you’ve ever watched Sarah Richardson and Tommy sift through botanicals and wanted some for yourself…this is the shop for you! Pics are the Links to her store

I love these antique coral and sea life prints…

And how about the botanicals…

And, don’t go thinking that these are only for stuffy old traditional applications. Here’s a great contemporary example from Tobi Fairley which shows  how antique prints look fantastic in a casual eclectic interior.

Kelowna Design Project Update

Written by on 20th March 2012 in Blog POSTS with 3 Comments

Here’s an update on one of my ongoing design projects.  Most of the furniture we selected and purchased before the holidays has arrived and the house is starting to come together.  There are a few more key pieces and accessorizing to do, but the result is already warm and inviting. My clients are dear friends who have totally blown my mind with their willingness to follow my suggestions but also their increased confidence to carry on with the decoration of their home and make great choices on their own.  This project was very much a collaboration between myself and the husband and wife team and despite the fact that there were several interests at play the results are a testament to the great communication among us. Their home successfully incorporates their love of Canadian First Nations art with their need to have a safe and child friendly place for the little one to play.

This art piece is by Sabina Hill of Vancouver.

There are a lot of elements at play here. I needed to honor the client’s love of Stickley furniture and arts and craft design while incorporating contemporary art pieces, Traditional/Mediterranean architecture and a need for a soft and kid friendly space where everyone can flop at the end of the day. Tall order….but I think it is turning out great!

Artist Adam Noonan

The Christmas Small Art Exhibition is on now until Jan 2, 2012 at the Victoria Massey Gallery. Over 60 artists are displayed and the original pieces sell for between $100 to $150 dollars.  Find a Unique Local Christmas gift and support the arts!

I adore using small pieces to create a gallery wall of treasured items. Why not try one in your place? Here’s some examples of gallery walls I have assembled lately.

Coastal Coasters

Written by on 15th December 2011 in Blog POSTS with 0 Comments

This Holiday Season I’ve been searching for just the perfect gift  for clients… Something practical, beautiful, natural, local, one of a kind and priced reasonably.  Is that too much to ask?   Well I finally found it!  Yay!!

Now don’t get too excited because this is going to be a gift for future clients because I don’t have enough yet to share, but I met a great lady (Char Manning) at the Last Chance Craft show in Sidney this weekend who makes these spoon rests that I immediately saw as coasters.

Get it? They will  protect all the beautiful tables I am helping clients purchase and install in their spaces.

I love the rustic west coast flavour of these pieces… the watery colours… the imperfect glaze and the one of a kind impression they give when you see them …

A few rubber stickies on the bottom and you’re golden!!  There are amazing potters all over the island; support one near you!

Jimmy Wright

Written by on 28th November 2011 in Blog POSTS with 1 Comment

My admiration for the work of artist Jimmy Wright brought me in touch with another private seller this week.  She has two small Polar Bear pieces one red and one navy blue. These could be a good deal, but need to be authenticated by a reputable gallery. I love these pieces and have suggested them for children’s rooms and residential gallery walls.  The picture below is a similar representation of the style of the pieces for sale.  If you’re interested contact me and I can put you in touch with the seller. This is an example only...not the exact item for sale

First Furniture

Written by on 5th October 2011 in Blog POSTS with 0 Comments

Last weekend I commented that was disappointed that I didn’t see any First Nations exhibitors at the Interior Design Show.  I saw a display by Sabina Hill, a Vancouver based designer who is inspired by First Nation motifs…and I certainly noticed this stunning chair…

…but I didn’t write about it because I’d rather write about west coast Aboriginal artists.  Long story short, Sabina Hill collaborated to design some furniture pieces with amazing artist Andy Everson.  Sometimes there is more to the story than first meets the eye. I was too quick to judge.
