Barista Bling – Beautiful Coffee Tampers

Written by on 1st July 2012 in Blog POSTS with 0 Comments

I recently had to go shopping to replace the coffee tamper for my espresso machine.  On my adventure I learned about a local artisan named Reg Barber who makes the most beautiful wood and steel tampers I have ever seen.  If you, or someone you love is into coffee this might just be an amazingly thoughtful and stylish gift idea.

Reg Barber Enterprises has been making these beauties since 1995. Check here to see whether there is a retailer near you. Available in light or dark wood and a variety of steel finishes and colours you are sure to find one you like. I love pieces like this. Local, original, beautiful and affordable. Quadruple Threat! Check Him Out!

Muse & Merchant – Grand Opening

Written by on 18th May 2012 in Blog POSTS with 0 Comments

I’m going to check out the new Muse & Merchant furniture store at Millstream in Langford, BC this weekend.  Maybe I’ll see you there?

Update: I checked it out. They have some nice things, large scale pieces and an industrial edge. I liked it and the prices were not bad.

I ran into an old friend…this replica of the Barcelona Chair … I’m still in love with it in distressed leather.

My most used App for design projects last year…and definitely this year is Dropbox!!  As I move around from job sites and projects I am always eager to document each step of the way in photos.  I simply use my iPhone to take pictures when I’m on the go and drop my pics into Dropbox when I get home to my computer. Super Easy Super Smart!

Yes, I Wood

Written by on 12th July 2011 in Blog POSTS with 1 Comment

Would you like some wine, cheese and bread?  Check out my latest acquisition…a fab serving platter/chopping block with a natural edge.  The warm colour of the wood and the organic shape make it the perfect accessory for my slightly retro right angled kitchen.

Next Stop Charelli’s on Foul Bay Rd for some amazing local cheese and serrano ham (pic is link to their amazing shop)

Don’t forget some bread from Fol Epi at 398 Harbour Road in Victoria (no website, you just have to go!)

And of course a little wine! In fact, last week I had a wine consultation from a sommelier friend of mine, so I have some exciting white wines chilling that I’ve never tried before!

My Cool – Six Pack

Written by on 11th May 2011 in Blog POSTS with 0 Comments

I often get asked what I like and although it changes I assembled six things or ideas here that I am really drawn to….or saving up for…at the moment.

To me, these items or themes are current and cool but also represent good value as investments and timeless style that can be re-used in other areas of the house forever. Great style is versatile!

1. Distressed Danish Modern Chair – By Design Modern Is it wrong to love a chair this much??

2. Thomas O’Brien Hicks Pendant – Chintz & Co.  Looks awesome in my dining room!!

3. Kilim Rugs – eBay. I am drawn to the reds and the bargains online.

4. Hammered metal – Accents DeVille I’m into metallics period. Period metallics even better!

5. Simple Wood Console – Monarch …timeless

6. Books and more Books. I love rooms with Books.

Oh Suzani

Written by on 13th April 2011 in Design & History with 1 Comment

So what is a Suzani? It is an elaborate embroidered textile, usually cotton or silk that was traditionally used as a dowry gift to the groom on his wedding day. The Suzani tradition grew out of the ancient silk road textile trade and continues to represent popular themes of home, love and kinship through its designs.

The moon, sun and flowers are some of the most popular circular designs and recently the popular suzani’s have popped up in home decor fabrics with a contemporary twist on the antique pieces.

Suzani Throws are used beautifully as Wall Art in the bedroom:

Martyn Bullard Elle Decor

Or on the Bed as a graphic statement:

The motif is everywhere in Fabric: (Fabric: richloom, Jed Johnson, Waverly, Fabric.com)

And Pillows: (Peter Dunham, Nathan Turner, Pier1, Kathryn Ireland)

I’ve never been to the far east, or the middle east for that matter, but I am still drawn to these pieces and marvel at the workmanship.  There are inexpensive Suzani’s to be had on eBay and there are local stores that sell them too.  You know the shops that sell sarongs, scarves and funky sun dresses, those ones! Dig around and you may find some treasures. I recently stumbled upon one of these stores at Bastion Square right scross from those hideous giant tulips. I don’t recall the name of the place but it’s packed to the rafters with esatern textiles and clothing. Sometimes rug importers have Suzani textiles too. Check it out.
