Picot – A Great Find in Fernwood

It has been awhile since I gushed over a store in Victoria so when a client recently mentioned a new spot in Fernwood that she thought I would like I jumped at the chance to check it out! I made it in last week … let me tell you what I found…

1404933049499First, the owner. Britt Buntain, an accomplished writer, Yoga instructor, weaver and now a kick butt entrepreneur who has created a beautiful retail space that is somehow both calm and exciting. It reads as as a stylish art gallery but functions as a marketplace and creative makers from all corners of North America are represented in this little space. Britt’s woven tapestries are among the beautiful pieces in store and I was lucky enough to sit down with her and ask her some questions about her story and her new venture. The shop is named “Picot” a charming nod to her beautiful woven arts which means small loops of twisted thread decorating the border of a fabric.

She was cool and kind and I wanted to ask and tell her all kinds of fan girl things like, “hey where’d you get that cute hair cut lady? Nice boots!! Great hat!!!!, and oh yeah, can we be friends?” But I kept it on the up’n’up…. totally professional:)

To put it mildly, this girl Britt … she is a force of nature. She told me how she left her career to pursue her dream of owning a shop and has connected with accomplished makers to fill her store, which she describes as an artisan collective, with hand made goods for home, life and body.  The shop, which is located at 2000 Fernwood Rd., is actually her second location and just before her re-opening a few months ago she had a freak medical episode where she went almost completely blind.  She described the whole experience and long recovery with the grace and acceptance of a monk which says a lot about how strong and determined the girl must be!  Two months convalescence paid off and finally the stars aligned for her grand re-opening just over a month ago. It’s no surprise that her little gem of a shop is getting great reviews and lots of support from the community.

Pieces that you wont be able to resist include the cool assortment of beautiful pottery.  From classic forms in earthy glazes to whimsical mugs and pots sporting witchy magic symbols. Her potters are creating new and exciting things that you simply don’t see anywhere else. I’m addicted.

The amazing bags, totes and jewellery she carries got my heart racing – There is some seriously beautiful leather in store and these woven bags are exceptional;

The blankets include hand knitted beauties as well as masterfully woven pieces that would make perfect gifts. Run, don’t walk. seriously.

Make your way to this amazing shop that supports artisans and helps all of us up-the-ante on our personal style. Britt has a great eye (no pun intended) and is really insightful and helpful when choosing a gift or a piece for your home.  I snagged some pottery for myself already and my wish list grows with each visit.

I should also tell you that I’m selling my prized bohemian line of pillows at Picot for a limited time, so If you have been eyeing my African Indigo pillows you better act fast, quantities are limited!
